With the design, we wanted to achieve a visually attractive consumer friendly publication with a focus on sourcing and sustainability. Instead of opting to release this information a PDF or booklet, Source Code communicates sustainability through the medium itself, by using a recycled paper stock and printing locally. While the first edition of Source Code only covers a couple years of sourcing history, the information it contains will be helpful for years to come. That, combined with the quality of the magazine, will encourage readers to hold on to the magazine.

Another feature that we are most proud to feature are the QR Codes the allow the reader to can scan with their phones to watch videos related to how coffee is processed and cupped along with showing real life transparency reports and contracts with the intention of showing the prices Metric pays along with providing a seed to cup illustrative value chain analysis to show all of the costs involved.
Were there any specific references that informed the design?
Our biggest reference for Source Code was the pilot version of “A Sustainable Coffee Buyer’s Guide” by Azahar Coffee. In their guide, they bring radical transparency and knowledge to all parts of the supply chain.
Essentially, the team at Azahar calculated the time spent by P= The price necessary to achieve an income goal (i) for producers with specific, known costs of production (c) and volumes (v) utilizing data from producers in 3 different departments in Colombia to arrive at a price per cargo that took into account three different tiers of pricing- poverty, minimum and a more sustainable income.
