The Tutunik Atutun ("hot coffee" in Náhuat) project supports funding and makes visible the women of the Nahnantzin of the Cuna Náhuat (Cradles of Learning). These teachers protect ancestral practices in El Salvador and preserve indigenous culture by maintaining the Náhuat language and sharing plant-based medicine. Their work celebrates and defends identity and traditions for future generations. The naming of the project and design decisions were made in collaboration with the women of the Nahnantzin of the Cuna Náhuat. When we visited Izalco in El Salvador we took note of the colorful floral patterns used in both the clothing and artwork of the indigenous population and incorporated these elements into our design. We also utilized a paper sleeve for ease of production as two different coffees were roasted & distributed in the US and El Salvador, both featuring labels in English and Spanish.
