Our primary objective with this cafe design was to create a space that paid homage to our rural identity as a company, while staying connected to the more urban and eclectic downtown Madison community.

The building was recently renovated and has a very modern, clean aesthetic from the outside. We preserved the original feel of the infrastructure while balancing the starkness of the concrete floor and wall-to-wall glass facade with grounding textures throughout the cafe. The polished concrete floor adds another layer of depth to the space.

Our custom designed furniture is made from American grey elm, a local species of wood. The unique lines bring dynamic movement and texture to the space along with a warm, variegated color pattern. The wood furniture creates a welcoming visual contrast to the cooler feel of the glass, concrete and deep blue color palette. The use of the dark blue color tones and subtle copper highlights builds upon visual themes found in our retail bags and broader brand design.

The main walls of the space and pillars are tiled with long, thin white tiles oriented vertically. The repeated pattern creates linear movement while adding to the experience of height and openness. To contrast the tile, we added a generously curved bar. The circular feel adds a dynamic element, creating movement and softness, while also lending a sense of approachability to the space.

Creating an open design allows guests the opportunity for interconnectivity and spontaneous interaction. Intentional nooks are found throughout to create a feeling of intimacy and connection. The tables were designed to be slightly small to further enhance the experience of closeness while guests are seated together.
