Aldo Felix Studio has been designing Tanamera outlets for the last 9 years. Each outlet has a different look, but 3 pillars persist hardiness, sustainability and a connection to nature. Set in a neighbourhood mall in Singapore, this angular space is 1,292 sq ft, surrounded by glass, with 2 different entrances and floor elevations. Due to the tropical urban climate, locals have an affinity for nature, yet love the comfort of an air-conditioned indoor environment. This design provides both. The design team took advantage of the incoming natural light while allowing customers to view the greeneries outside. The neutral palette of the design accentuates the brand colours. Tanamera, which means “Red Earth” in the Indonesian language, exudes red in its coffee cups and packaging design. Argentum grey stone tiles produced the textured wall effect, a nod to nature. This is juxtaposed against the stainless-steel countertop and railings, considering its neutrality to the sensory, cleanliness and durability. As an Indonesian brand, the team wanted to highlight talents in sustainable furniture-making from their home country. The rattan chairs from Santai (Yogyakarta) are a fast-growing, lightweight, forest-friendly alternative to regular wood. Concrete stools from Conture (Bandung) were made of composites incorporating cigarette butt waste – “using butts for your butts”, while the tabletops from ecollabo8 (Bali) were made using 100% recycled plastic, repurposing waste which would have otherwise gone into landfills. These companies not only provide solutions for tackling environmental degradation – but they also uplift social mobility within their local communities. As sustainability becomes a critical part of any new project, this space aims to raise the bar.
