Since opening our first shop in 2017, Rebel Dog Coffee Co.’s mission has been to create an approachable specialty coffee experience for everyone, and to cater to all coffee drinkers’ preferences. When we began our own roasting program in 2021, we wanted to create packaging for our coffee that conveyed our welcoming approach and desire to craft better coffee–for everyone. Thankfully, there are few things more welcoming than a friendly, floppy-eared dog. Our logo features prominently on the front of the bag to draw people in, and is balanced by the bright, complementary color labels that also serve the purpose of making each coffee easily distinguishable from one another.

While we want each coffee to be well-represented and for certain details to be immediately available on the bag when someone picks it up, we also know that providing lengthy details about individual coffees can feel alienating or confusing for those who aren't familiar with the specialty coffee industry. To achieve a balance, we include a QR code on the back of each bag, leading to our interactive website page with detailed information about the coffees we offer, producers and their communities, and our green buying philosophies and practices.

On the side panel, we have included the phrase “Drink Better Coffee.” It is simple, almost hidden, yet still bold, and serves to pique one’s desire to learn more about the coffee in their hands. On the back, we invite them to consider just what “better coffee” might be, beyond just a better tasting coffee–again, by simply scanning the QR code. With this, consumers are in control of their experience with our coffee, and it helps us extend an invitation into the world of specialty coffee to everyone who picks up a bag of coffee from Rebel Dog.
