The coffeebar was designed to be an urban oasis, deeply inspired by Texas Hill Country swimming holes and the city of Austin. It pays homage to both by staying local in sourcing, only using materials found within 25 miles of Austin throughout the space. The horseshoe shaped bar itself was built out of Texas Gray Lueders limestone, the same stone as the swimming holes.
It took 4,800 bricks, 10,000 cuts and 13,000 total pieces to create the beautiful brick mural that anchors our new Shoal Creek Coffeebar! The mural titled ‘We Are Living On A Star’ was designed by local artist, Erin Curtis. Erin created this piece with glazed, locally-produced Elgin Butler brick, cut into three simple shapes and reassembled into a series of repeating geometric patterns. The design is inspired by American quilts and Islamic tiling with a color palette that mirrors the big blue skies of Texas and its sparkling swimming holes!
We’re excited to share a behind the scenes look at Erin’s design process and all of the hands that went into creating this work of art. Enjoy it in person at the new Intelligentsia Shoal Creek Coffeebar in Austin!
