Bongo Roasting Co
The goal of the Bongo Roasting Co. packaging system was to honor the company’s thirty-year heritage while establishing a bold, recognizable presence within the modern specialty coffee landscape.
Bongo was founded in 1993 when Bob Bernstein opened the original Bongo Java café in Nashville with the intention of building community around thoughtfully sourced coffee. From the beginning, the company prioritized organic sourcing, direct relationships with small-scale farmers, and a belief that coffee should connect people as much as it delights them. These values—transparency, ethical sourcing, and community—served as guiding principles throughout the design process.
The visual system draws from two primary influences: the cultural energy of Nashville and the agricultural origins of coffee. A flowing graphic element, referred to as the “music river,” runs through the label system. Inspired by the Cumberland River and Nashville’s musical identity, it introduces rhythm and movement while tying the design back to the brand’s hometown.
The broader visual language also references Bauhaus design principles. Strong color blocking and geometric label forms create a clear, structured graphic system that feels modern while remaining approachable.
The color palette reflects the lifecycle of coffee itself: the red of the coffee cherry, the dark tones of roasted beans, and warm earth colors inspired by soil and farmland. Transparent windows allow customers to see the beans inside, reinforcing the company’s commitment to openness and traceability.
The result is packaging that functions not only as a container, but as a storytelling platform—connecting customers to the people, land, and philosophy behind every cup.
Since its founding, Bongo Roasting Co. has prioritized organic agriculture, fair pricing for farmers, and long-term relationships with small-scale producers.
The packaging reflects those values through design choices that reduce waste and emphasize transparency.
The bags are fully recyclable, and the modular multi-color labeling system allows a single bag design to accommodate many coffees without requiring constant reprinting.
This flexibility reduces production waste while supporting a rotating coffee program based on seasonal harvests.
