The great cafes and bistros in European culture have always been more than just places to eat and drink. They are places where people from all walks of life, whether artists or writers, business people or politicians, can come and interact freely. They are social hubs, places for discussion, thought, relaxation, inspiration, and intimate time with friends. People can laugh, tell stories, share ideas, and debate in a casual, safe atmosphere that is comfortable and stress free.

And amongst the bustling activity within there is an unspoken sense that everyone belongs, that everyone matters. Great ideas and dialogue go hand in hand with excellent food and drink. We find inspiration not only in that which nourishes our bodies, but in the social interaction that follows. The corner cafes and bistros of great European have become the social mainstay of the neighborhood in which they reside, a safe haven for everyone, anytime of day or night. We hope that the Anderson Social follows in the same tradition.

Inspired by a love of European café culture, the design team deviated from the typical “plywood-chic” minimalist coffee house aesthetic and dove head-first into the very ethos that created this typology decades ago. Birthed during the Beaux Arts era of the 1920’s and 1930’s, European cafes and corner bistros quickly became the neighborhood hub for all manner of socializing. Classical detailing and rich ornamentation elevated the everyday need for caffeine into an art form, and the Anderson Social embodies this very aesthetic. From rich Farrow & Ball paint colors, to authentic Egg & Dart Crown Mouldings, to whimsical wall and ceiling treatments, every detail was painstakingly chosen to create an authentic atmosphere where to-go cups are discouraged and lingering is preferred.

It has been said that the most sustainable building is the one that already exists. Guided by this ethos, the design team embraced the 100 year old building shell, deciding to expose and celebrate authentic architectural elements such as original structural steel beams that still bore the chalk markings of the San Francisco foundry that forged them for this specific building. Other sustainable elements include repurposed furnishings, hardware and original brass fixtures which were found discarded in the building’s basement. And all primary lighting elements, including our stately solid brass chandelier and elegant bar pendants, were salvaged from the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC.
