ander cacao
The design of our hand brew cacao packaging is a modern interpretation of the traditional Japanese art of packaging, called tsutsumi. It emphasizes simplicity, respect & beauty using natural materials. It acts as a thoughtful, often ritualistic, way to protect an object while honoring the recipient through careful, intentional folding. There is the aesthetic pleasure of contemplating a package without the hurry of ripping the paper or cutting tape to see what’s inside.
In our design we deliberately wanted to step away from the classic boxy-shaped packaging with 8 corners and 6 sides, to emphasize a more natural, flowing shape. It combines a unique aspect of uncoated structured paper with distinct ‘rounded corners’ at the main body, a gable top & deliberate small handle (‘pretty sure you can handle better cacao’).
All these elements contribute to a conscious way of giving, receiving & holding the packaging. When gifting, the receiver receives it with both hands around the rounded corners, creating a maximal though very soft touch surface. When carrying the package, the small handle opening invites to casually dangle the box with 2 fingers.
Each package holds 180g of cobea, outstanding, plantation-traceable, ground cocoa beans, to be hand brewed like a filter coffee. awarded Best New Product by the SCA.
The ritual & intentional time associated with the experience of filter brewing starts with the packaging. It invites to be opened carefully using tear strips, unveiling its content, performing the first manual acts building up to the folding of a paper filter, dosing with care, pouring intentionally, being aware of aromas, colors etc. After each brew, the inner packaging can easily be re-inserted in the box, using a fold & tuck in technique.
