The packaging is meant to elicit a feeling of familiarity and memory. Food cans speak to a sense of the home, comfort, and nourishment. They’re also human in scale and tactility; meant to be held in hand, as pouring vessels, and reused with imagination.

With these coffee cans, we aimed to create a product that has levels of experience for the customers, with moments of anticipation and clues to intentionality.

Each can design is informed by where the coffee is grown. The illustrations in our designs are inspired by the people and the regions where the coffees are harvested and processed, as well as the tasting notes and roast profiles of the beans. Research is done, both in person and via published texts and documentaries, to find regional masks, garb, and other details that each design signifies. Many of the masks in our designs have been used in indigenous and native regional cultures, and represent aspects of long-standing traditions of those places. We are inspired by the rich culture and endless wonder of Mexico, and are proud to explore the regional differences that make up each of our coffees.

Furthermore, our company is Mercado Sin Nombre. It means “market without a name”, and is an appreciation of Mexican markets and a nostalgia for American grocery stores. We are leaning into our namesake with these food cans, as we believe that they are timeless both as non-perishables and because they unlock memories.

Aluminum food cans are the quintessential recyclable item. 97% of recycled aluminum cans are turned back into new cans, and inherit a spirit of re-use even more than glass or plastic.

This is another instance of timelessness and reuse. Compared to a plastic or paper coffee bag and the confusion that comes with whether or not they’re recyclable, an aluminum can is the most recycled item in the world.
